Hello Friends of Knight Inlet Lodge.
The Bad News
Knight Inlet Lodge has made the difficult, and frankly painful, decision to suspend operations for the 2020 season.
We did not arrive to this conclusion casually, but in light of government travel advisories, and restrictions which recommends against all non-essential travel to Canada, plus anyone arriving required to self-quarantine for 14 days, it has simply made it impossible to continue. We are very aware that this has created unforeseen consequences for both our guests and staff, however, the primary motivator for the decision was the health and safety of all the stakeholders in our business, as well as the communities we live and operate in.
Thank you for your understanding and working with us and our travel partners over the past couple of months, we hope to host you under much better circumstances in the near future. With that said, I would like to provide you with an update on some of the things we have been working on.
The Good News
Seasonal Lodge Staff
Like many people around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has jeopardized employment opportunities, particularly in the tourism sector. The owners and management of Knight Inlet Lodge feel a responsibility to our valued Lodge operations staff, and we have endeavored to employ many of our Lodge staff working on conservation, and maintenance projects. We hope to carry these projects on through much of our regular Lodge operations season.
Grizzly Bear Research and Conservation
Over the past 24 years Knight Inlet Lodge has invested extensively into ongoing science based grizzly bear research and conservation. Our research and conservation program is continuing this summer and fall and we will be providing a detailed report in the coming months on the work that we have supported.
Food security for grizzly bears is paramount to bear survival and reproduction. Knight Inlet Lodge has facilitated numerous salmon enhancement and conservation projects over the years and this year we have partnered with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Da'Naxda'xw / Awaetlala First Nation on a long-term pink salmon enhancement project. We will be providing more details on this exciting project in the near future.
Health & Safety
Knight Inlet Lodge management and staff continue to evaluate all aspects of our lodge operations in relation to COVID-19 and we intend to be fully operational for the 2021 season. We will implement and enhance our health and safety protocols for guests and staff. Our staff, infrastructure, operating systems, and partners will fully comply with all associated regional, provincial and federal health and safety regulations. All our service and goods suppliers are an integral part of our team and we are working with them to ensure they also add enhanced procedures and protocols.
We know we cannot control what may come in the next few months from a global point of view, but we know that in times like these, it Is important to have adventure and the stimulus of nature. We also know that we will strive to provide a safe environment while you enjoy bear viewing at one of the most pristine, remote and simply amazing parts of the Canada.
All of us here at Knight Inlet Lodge sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are healthy and safe. Best wishes, and we look forward to welcoming you to Knight Inlet Lodge in 2021.
